We thought an ice cream beer float sounded like a good idea and others (notably Mark Dredge and Zak Avery) have raved about it.
As I was staying up to watch the Superbowl, I thought I’d give it a go with two of my favourite American imports, Brooklyn Chocolate Stout and Ben & Jerry’s.
And, do you know what? It was horrid.
The lovely dark chocolate roastiness of the beer became metallic and cheesy. The two ingredients cancelled each other out.
I had to pour it away.

I think it was Wikipedia where I read that he’d died of complications arising from trichinosis, but that must have been a malicious plant by the powerful anti-pork lobby which has since been corrected.
IMO, This works better with a beer that is otherwise too sickly sweet to enjoy. Over on this side of the pond, I find that Southern Tier’s Creme Brulee makes a pretty good beer float.
My gran used to make my lemonade sundaes but beer? Please tell me Mr Avery didn’t put ice cream in his wine glass?! I’d better take a look…
Eating an ice cream sandwich whilst drinking ice cold cooking lager is a nice treat on a hot summer day here in the States. Of course it was 100F on the day I first tried it.
