Boak is on tour in France and Spain. This is the first update from “our foreign correspondent”…
Does anyone know anything about breweries in the south of France?
I’d assumed there wouldn´t be a lot, but in the tourist office in Beziers I noticed an advert for Brasserie d’Oc, between Beziers and Montpellier. Anyone had anything from them? They even offer a brewery tour, so if they´re any good, I´m tempted to take a detour and go and see.
I´m told there are others too, although a quick internet search has not turned up any names or places.
Have I totally misjudged the brewing scene in Languedoc, home of the most militant wine manufacturers in France?

This may be a good place to start: http://www.dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/Beer/Brewers/France/
If you can read French, then you’ll probably find a few more here: http://www.dmoz.org/World/Fran%c3%a7ais/Maison/Cuisine/Boissons/Bi%c3%a8re/ and http://www.dmoz.org/World/Fran%c3%a7ais/Commerce_et_%c3%a9conomie/Gastronomie_et_alimentation/Boissons/Bi%c3%a8re/
Here you’ll find a clickable map of French breweries by departement:
http://perso.orange.fr/yves.bou/brasseries/regions/carte.htm
It lists two breweries in Montpellier, eight in all of Languedoc-Roussillon.
Fifteen years ago you would have been right to assume that there was bugger all in the South of France, but there has been a boom in micros since then. Few in English-speaking beer world appear to have noticed.
I thought brewing in Europe was dying off, and we were poised for a flood of superior imports from The Most Exciting Brewing Nation in the World (TM). Please, do read from the script, Ron.
Stonch you mean imports from Germany? According to a prestigous survey, Germany is The Most Exciting Brewing Nation in the World. Really.
Do we have a script? Bugger. I just keep making it up as I go along. Can you mail me a copy of the script so I don’t make any more foolish mistakes?
Thanks for the suggestions chaps. I´ll attempt to check a few out when I´m back in France.
