Cheap booze

Fiona Beckett, best known for her blog and book  The Frugal Cook, has launched another blog called Credit Crunch Drinking. She’s going to hunt down and test out economical alternatives to posh wine, spirits and beer.

We’re absolutely fascinated by the mysterious world of own-brand supermarket beer, so we’ll be watching with interest.

We’ve been talking for ages about doing a blind tasting to decide (a) whether cans are really that much worse than bottles and (b) which is the best supermarket own-brand lager. That’s another one for the list, then!

…I was pleasantly surprised recently by Morrisson’s ‘own beer’ – Green Hop ale and Chestnut Ale – until I turned the bottle round to find Titanic had in fact brewed them. So i’m sure this doesnt count, although I won’t be buying ‘Bettabuy’ Lager/Beer any time soon.

Thanks for the plug B & B! Will do my best with the own brands. I like the Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range which is brewed by Meantime. And seem to remember the Co-op had some decent brews at one time.

Almost all the supermarkets now have own brand beers which are made by name breweries. I think Somerfield are selling Arcobrau wheat beer as their own, for example, and very nice too.

And, once again, I’d like to put in a shout for my favourite cornershop lager, Svyturys Ekstra, from Lithuania. It might have rice in, but who cares: it tastes great.
