This sign advertising the range of Charrington’s beers is about two metres square and now sits on the side of an otherwise very plainly decorate budget-conscious hotel on Markhouse Road, Walthamstow. It’s one of our very favourites.

It’s a smasher and no mistake.
Beautiful. So is your header!
And no mention of lager!
Beautiful sign, you could almost imagine the Pocket Handerkerchiefs hanging around outside.
The building was previously the Common Gate pub, which closed in 2002 – after a spell named ‘Couples’, but better known locally as ‘Fights’. It was re-built in 1888 and the Charrington’s sign probably dates from then or soon after.
There’s a near identical sign on the side of an old pub just off the Edgeware Road, I’ll see if I can get a picture and a pub name for you next time I’m down there.
a corker, and no mistake. Check out TGS and have a look at The Garden Gate link in my latest post, i reckon you’ll appreciate that.
I think the Thornhill Arms on the Caledonian Road has something similar too.
I love this sign – I’ve passed it on almost every single one of the 12,435 driving lessons I’ve had.
