Six Pints for Less Than a Fiver, 1978

From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (radio version, 1978):

FORD PREFECT
Six pints of bitter and quickly, please. The world’s about to end.

BARMAN
There you are sir — six pints.

FORD PREFECT
Keep the change.

BARMAN
What from a fiver? Thank you, sir!

In 1977, the RRP for a pint of Courage bitter was 32-34p a pint (Michael Davis, Observer, 26/6) so I reckon Ford was due about £3 in change.

That’s how clever Douglas Adams was. He made up jokes that would only be funny years later.
