VIDEO: Beer Drinking Ritual, Lima, Peru
In 2010, journalist Dan Collyns (@dancollyns) joined a group of Peruvian Sunday league football players for a post-match beer: there’s one glass, one bottle per round, and rather a wet floor.
(Here’s the original video as it appeared on the BBC news website, rather than as a dodgy YouTube upload.)
This advertisement for Courage Best from 1979 does the rounds fairly frequently and it’s obvious why: authentic period cinematography, a catchy tune based on a hit single, and a brilliant statement of ‘brand identity’. Thirty-five years later, with extra layers of retro-nostalgic charm, it’s surely due a revival by the current brand-owners.
Footage (mostly) from 1910 of the brand new Humbser Brewery in Fürth, near Nuremberg, with a rather unnecessary voice-over.
PS. We’re not sure of the ethics of embedding this one — obviously ripped from Bavarian TV, but we’re assuming that’s a problem for YouTube and, anyway, it’s mostly made up of what must now be public domain footage.
This is the 9th in our series of really short films The Strange Rebirth of British Beer in 10 Objects.
It’s about a beer festival token and the development of the modern British beer festival.
With thanks to David Shipman, one of the directors of the Birmingham Beer Bash for donating the token.
